Look on the Bright Side - Free Chunky Hat Pattern

Chunky Ribbed Crochet Bobble Hat Pattern

Well 2021 hasn't got off to the best start for us with a 3rd lockdown due to Coronavirus and the children out of school and remote learning once more, but I'm determined to stay positive and keep to my new year's resolution of finishing off projects and writing up patterns. So, here is the first one completed for January. It's a hat to match my cowl pattern I posted on Instagram (@melly.elly.crochet) just before Christmas.

I love how the Cascades variegated yarn shows as changing stripes of bright happy colours. And, I can certainly vouch for how warm and snuggly this hat keeps you, as I've made good use of it over the last few days! The pattern is written for my head, which is a small adult size, but I have given instructions so that you can make the hat personalised to your own head size.

I've decided a good name for this hat and cowl set, considering the current situation, will be 'Look on the Bright Side - Chunky Hat and Cowl Pattern'

If you have a go at making one yourself, please do share your photo and tag me in it as I love seeing your makes and colour choices. If choosing a different yarn to the one I've used I recommend a super chunky that suggests a size 8mm crochet hook and you'll need about 200g.

What you'll need:

Yarn: Cascade Yarns - Big Wheel - Colour 17 - 1 x 200g ball. (Note: you may need an extra ball if making a larger adult size)

Hook: 6mm (US = J - 10)

Other craft tools: 8cm diameter pom-pom maker, darning needle and craft scissors

Abbreviations UK terms

ch = chain
st = stitch
htr = half treble crochet (US equivalent = half double crochet)
skip st = skip stitch
blo = back loop only

Tension - when working half trebles as pattern a 10cm / 4 inches square = 15 htr stitches and 8 rows (approx)

Sizing - The pattern is written for a small/medium adult size (circumference 55cm / 21.6ins), but I have given instructions so that you can make the hat personalised to your own head size.

Crochet Hat Pattern:

Start: Ch 39+1 (To adjust size of hat start with any odd number of chains +1. A good guide is to measure your chain from the crown of your head to just under your nose.)

Row 1: 1htr in 3rd chain from hook and remaining chains until end. Turn work.

(Completed row should have 38 htr plus the 2 turning chains at start which count as a 1htr = 39 sts in total).

Row 2: Ch2 (which counts as first htr stitch coming out of last htr of previous row), *ch1, skip st, 1htr in blo of next st**, repeat from *to** until end of row - note your last htr will be into the top of the Ch2 from the previous round. Turn work.

(Completed row should have 20htr and 19chs = 39 sts in total)

Row 3: Ch2 (counts as first htr stitch coming out of last htr of previous row), 1htr in blo of each st and ch along row. (Your last 2htrs will be worked into the third and second Ch of the starting Ch3 from the previous round. Turn work. (39sts)

Row 2 and 3 form the pattern. Repeat row 2 and 3 until you have 44 rows in total. Make sure to end on a row 2.

To adjust size for fit: test your work as you go to see if it wraps comfortably around your head. Reduce number of rows for a smaller fit or add 2 more rows at a time to make your hat wider. Always end on a row 2 of the pattern. Remember the hat will stretch a little over time with wear.

Sew the two short ends of your hat together.

Next, weave your needle and yarn in and out the row ends along the top edge of your hat, working all the way around your hat. Pull the yarn tight to gather, then fasten with stitches across the top to close the hole. Fold the bottom edge of your hat up to make the brim. You can secure this with a couple of stitches if you like, or leave it loose so you can adjust it each time you wear your hat.

Finishing touch: Make a pom-pom with your leftover yarn and a complementary colour if you need a little extra yarn. I've used some black DK yarn with what was left over of my chunky yarn. Attach the pom-pom to the top of your hat by threading a piece of yarn through the pom-pom centre and then threading both ends through the top of your hat and securing your ends inside the top of your hat.
